Distributed in the spring of 2021, the DEEP HORSE PRIMER presented participating writers and artists with a kind of what-I-talk-about-when-I-talk-about-horses, prepared by Hazel Meyer in an edition of 30. These books were inspired by course-packs (think Cerlox binding, and a thick swath of material, made sense only by the table of contents) and functioned to diagram Meyer’s vast research dossier on the material culture of equine care, equipment, and the horses and humans they bring together. Primed by this document, participants developed their own takes on this grand ole project of thinking alongside, with, and about horses.
